CHICAGO — Andrew Ladd wasn’t there to help the Blackhawks on Thursday night, and they probably could have used his help.

The Hawks could not solve Pekka Rinne in a 3-1 loss to the Predators at the United Center as the goaltender made 38 saves.

The loss is the Hawks’ second straight and fifth in their last seven games, although they looked much better than they did in the 6-1 drubbing the Wild administered Sunday.

The Hawks and Predators were tied 1-1 when Calle Jarnkrok scored on a shot from the slot 18 minutes, 9 seconds into the third period off a pass from Mike Fisher, who had two assists. Miikka Salomaki empty-netter then ended the scoring 48 seconds later.

The Hawks struck first in the second period when Brent Seabrook extended his career high in goals with his 12th of the season. Seabrook took a pass from winger Jiri Sekac in the slot and fired home a one-timer to give the Hawks a 1-0 lead 5:27 into the period.

The goal came after coach Joel Quenneville made a line change in putting Sekac on the right wing of the top line for Richard Panik.

The Predators tied the game when Viktor Arvidsson scored from point-blank range on goaltender Corey Crawford at 9:08.

It was night when Quenneville tried rearranging his lines to spice things up.

One of the most intriguing moves Quenneville made was on the third line with Dennis Rasmussen on left wing, Teuvo Teravainen at center and Andrew Desjardins on the right side. All three have the ability to play center. Rasmussen previously had been centering the Hawks’ fourth line while Teravainen and Desjardins had been flanking Phillip Danault, who was the center on the fourth line Thursday.

Teravainen has played at center only sparingly for most of the last few months as he primarily was playing right wing with Desjardins and Danault, but the Hawks have not given up on giving Teravainen another look at center.
