Hunter Ed: Hunting seasons are at hand, starting with the Aug. 27 opening of squirrel season, and the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency issues a reminder that anyone born after Jan. 1, 1969 must complete a Hunter Education class in order to get a license.

Information about where and where the classes are held, along with on-line classes, is available at tnwildlife.org and in the new Tennessee Trapping & Hunting Guide, available at most outdoors outlets.

Gun Club: Kerry Hale broke 49 of 50 targets to win the weekly trap shoot at the Cedar City Gun Club.

Jerry Sullivan took Senior honors with a 46 and Alexis Franck led the Ladies division with a round of 45.

For information about Gun Club activities or the Cedar City Straights interscholastic trap team, contact Hale at 615-519-2934.

Sandhill drawing: Drawings for permits for the state's 4th annual Sandhill Crane hunt will be held Aug. 13. Details are available at tnwildlife.org.

As in the past, successful applicants will have to pass a "Sandhill identification class" before being issued a permit.

Elk on eBay: The final permit for October's 8th annual elk hunt was auctioned on eBay over the weekend. The successful bidder, along with four hunters drawn by random for the Oct. 17-21 hunt, will be announced this week by the TWRA.

An archery hunt will also be held, Oct. 3-7, along with a Young Sportsman hunt for youngsters age 13-16.

Boating fatality: Another boating fatality occurred last week on Kentucky Lake in what is turning into one of the most dangerous summers in sometime on area waters.

According to investigators, the boat in which the victim was riding stuck an object in the water and flipped over. The victim was apparently struck in the head.

The TWRA continues its campaign to urge boaters to wear a life jacket. Although wearing a life jacket won't prevent all boating fatalities, wearing one greatly increases the odds of survival in the event of an accident.
