The loss eliminated the Phoenix (36-23) from the conference tournament and ended the club’s season, but not before Cumbeland posted the third most wins in a single season in program history, just two behind the 2014 club’s total of 38.
Graham singled, tripled and scored a run, Hoppenjans added an RBI and Imani Torregano scored twice for Cumberland, which stranded the bases loaded in the sixth and seven total runners in the contest.
Kara Howard (6-2) tossed 5.2 innings for the Tigers to get the win, allowing four runs on eight hits. She walked two and struck out one before giving way to Hannah Morton, who got the final five outs for the save but not without some angst. She gave up one run on one hit with one walk.
Morgan Arndt (13-11) took the loss for CU but pitched better than her line, allowing seven runs on seven hits in 3.1 innings. She walked one and struck out four, giving up only three hard-hit balls in the game.
Cumberland got on the board first thanks to a pair of Georgetown errors, including on the leadoff single to left by Graham in the first inning. The ball bounced past Chaselyn Allgeier and Graham raced into third base. She scored on a chopper up the middle from Torregano.
Torregano advanced to second on a groundout from Brigid Antonelli and scored on an infield single up the middle by Hegre for a 2-0 Phoenix lead after a half inning.
The Tigers got a run back in their half of the first, starting with a one-out single to center by Corrin Robinson, who stole second and went to third on a groundout by Howard. Skyelar Houston’s chopper up the middle was knocked down but Houston reached on a single and Robinson scored, cutting the CU edge to 2-1.
Georgetown scored two more runs in the third on four hits, though only one ball was hit hard against Arndt.
Allgeier led off with a solid single to left and took second on a wild pitch. Robinson’s blooper fell between the plate and circle for a hit, putting runners on the corners. The Tigers tried a double steal, with Robinson getting in a rundown. Graham held the runner but Arndt wasn’t looking on the throw back to the pitcher and Allgeier scored when the throw got away.
Howard then singled to center and took second on the throw, putting runners on second and third. Watson’s shallow single down the left-field line added a run for the Tigers, who took a 3-2 edge.
In the fourth Hannah Howes led off with a single to center and Allgeier singled to left with one out. Robinson then doubled to deep center, plating a run, and Howard followed with a triple to deep left, scoring two more. Houston’s single to center pushed across Howard for a 7-2 Tigers advantage.
In the fifth Allgeier singled to left and stole second before an RBI single by Robinson extended the lead to 8-2.
Cumberland cut into the deficit in the sixth, with Kayley Caplinger leading off with a single down the right-field line. After lineouts from Antonelli and Hegre, Courtney Miles singled to center and Shae Dunn walked, loading the bases.
Paolo Del Valle worked a free pass as well after a 10-pitch at-bat, forcing in a run, and Hoppenjans’ single over the first baseman’s head scored another run and ended the day for Howard. Graham battled through eight pitches against Morton before flying out to left to end the inning.
In the seventh Torregano drew a leadoff walk and moved to second on a wild pitch. Antonelli’s short single down the leftfield line put runners on the corners and Hegre’s groundout to second plated a run. Miles lined back to the pitcher to end the contest for the Phoenix.
