A former Smith County deputy was indicted for allegedly stealing drugs from the department’s evidence room.

At the request of District Attorney Tommy Thompson, Tennessee Bureau of Investigation agents started an investigation Monday into the theft of drugs from the evidence room at the Smith County Sheriff’s Department in Carthage.

Agents discovered on two occasions – one on-duty and one off-duty – Brandon McKae Marshall, of Gordonsville, removed items from evidence lockers for personal reasons. The department subsequently fired Marshall.

Marshall was charged Tuesday with two counts of official misconduct, two counts of theft and two counts of tampering with evidence. He was booked in at the Smith County Jail on $10,000 bond.
