Romero Valverde posts 77 to tie for seventh

LONDON, Ky. — Sophomore Raquel Romero Valverde carded a five-over par 77, the second-best score of the day, moving up 15 spots to a tie for seventh and helping Cumberland women’s golf to a third-place showing at the Bill Sergent Invitational on Tuesday.

Romero Valverde collected 13 pars, including her last eight holes, and just five bogeys in the round of 77. Marissa Singer from the University of St. Francis in Indiana posted the low score of the day with a 76, followed by Romero Valverde and Lucia Pena from the University of the Cumberlands, who also shot 77.

Senior Abbey Burgdorf registered a second-round 81 with a birdie and three-over 39 on her first nine holes. She tied for 10th overall along with Midway University’s Rylee Beard.

Senior Savanna Strode and junior Anna Leigh Cleveland each carded rounds of 87 on Tuesday. Strode collected six pars but three double bogeys while Cleveland recorded one birdie, four pars and three doubles. Strode tied for 20th and Cleveland tied for 31st.

Junior Tessa Barto tallied her second straight 91. After starting her round with four pars in the first six holes, a stretch of double-triple-double left her with 46 on her first nine. She played better on the last nine holes, making par on two of the last three and tying for 41st.

Cumberland moved up one spot in the team standings on Tuesday, finishing third behind the University of the Cumberlands and Northwestern Ohio. The Phoenix will play in the Mid-South Conference Fall Invitational next Monday and Tuesday in Georgetown, Ky.
