Strode, Burgdorf both shoot 83 in opening round

LONDON, Ky. — Seniors Abbey Burgdorf and Savanna Strode each shot 83, leading Cumberland to a tie for fourth in the team standings after the first round of the Bill Sergent Invitational in women’s golf action Monday.

Cumberland is tied with the University of St. Francis [Ind.] and Lawrence Tech for fourth place with a team score of 339, three shots from third place.

Burgdorf collected her only birdie of the round at the par-5 12th hole but netted just six pars in her round of 83. The Ashland, Ohio, native stands tied for 16th but is only three strokes from the Top 10.

Strode posted three birdies on the day, including back-to-back at Nos. 7 and 8, but three double bogeys and a triple derailed her round.

Sophomore Raquel Romero Valverde registered seven pars and two double bogeys en route to an opening-round 85. She stands tied for 22nd overall but three shots from the top 15.

Junior Anna Leigh Cleveland got off to a rough start on her first nine holes, but the Lebanon native finished strong. She recorded three pars and a birdie over her last five holes, shooting 88 to tie for 32nd.

Junior Tessa Barto netted five pars and a birdie during her round on Monday, but three doubles and two triples sent the Spring Hill native to a 91, tied for 40th.

Cumberland will tee off at 8:30 a.m. CDT with Midway University, the University of the Cumberlands and Northwestern Ohio on Tuesday in the second and final round of the tournament, weather permitting.
