Lebanon’s win streak snapped at four

MANCHESTER—When it returns from its fall break, Lebanon will try to start another winning streak.

With Vols coach Butch Jones watching, Tennessee commitment Alontae Taylor ran for two touchdowns and passed for a third as the Blue Devils fell to host Coffee County 19-14 Friday night. Lebanon had won four straight games for the first time since 2006.

Lebanon (4-4) now has two weeks before finishing the regular season with games at Wilson Central and Rossview. A win would likely clinch a playoff spot, and two would all but guarantee the Blue Devils would play host to a first-round game. The school went to the playoffs the last two years under a format where all Class 6A schools automatically qualified.

Coffee County raised its record to 2-5.

Lebanon had a last-chance drive to try and win the game, driving from its own 19 to a first down at the Coffee County 17 with about a minute left. But a sack forced the Blue Devils into a fourth-and-long, and Taylor intercepted the next pass.

After a scoreless first quarter, Tyrique Cooper opened the scoring with a 3-yard touchdown run. Coffee County countered with a touchdown drive led by Taylor's running, and then consummated with his 16-yard scoring toss to Zach Vaughn. That tied the game with a little more than three minutes to go in the first half

After it looked like the Red Raiders might be content to run out the first-half clock, Taylor ripped off a 49-yard run to get his team close, and he threw a pass to the Lebanon 1 with four seconds left. Taylor then scored on a run to close the half, giving the Red Raiders a 13-7 halftime lead.

Taylor had a 1-yard touchdown to finish off another long Coffee Country drive, making it 19-7. Chandler Crite brought the Blue Devils back to within 19-14 on a short touchdown run of his own.

Taylor finished with 30 carries for 169 yards, and accounted for all but 35 of the Red Raiders' 286 yards.
