Watertown rallies for win

Watertown came behind for the second time in as many weeks to pick up a win against Westmoreland, 17-14, as the team heads into its bye week.

Watertown found themselves in a 14-0 hole with less than 4 minuets remaining in the first half after Tate Sloan found the end zone for the second time for the Eagles. His first score came at 4:13 in the first quarter on a 10-yard run.

The score came after a bad snap on Watertown’s punt attempt gave the Eagles the ball on the 20-yard line. The play symbolized Watertown’s first half, which featured three first downs, all of which came on the Purple Tiger’s final possession of the half.

Heath Price capped that possession with a 6-yard scoring pass from Bryce Webster to cut the Eagle’s lead to 14-7 at halftime.

“I felt like we performed a whole better the second half. It didn’t feel like we came out with much fire and didn’t feel like we were really ready to play the first half,” Watertown head coach Gavin Webster said. “We talked to them at halftime and made some adjustments to what we were wanting to do and was able to get a little run game going.”

Sophomore Deramus Carey sparked the Purple Tiger’s run game to start the second half as he piled up 39 yards on their first drive, which resulted in a 25-yard field goal from Nathaniel Gutierrez.

Carey gave Watertown their first and final lead of the game with 7:22 remaining in the fourth quarter on a 22-yard run. Carey and Keon Dotson combined for 137 yards out of the backfield for the game.

Webster also credited his defense, which held Westmoreland to two first downs in the second half, which included two key sacks from Zach Hill and game-sealing interception by Brandon Allison.

“[Assistant coach Josh Hackett] made adjustments as halftime and the defense played lights out. The main thing is we wrapped up and didn’t give up any big plays,” Webster said.

Watertown will have a bye week next week before they travel to Jackson County on Oct. 13.
