Extra point conversion lifts Purple Tigers

The pass set up the score that set up the two-point extra point conversion as Watertown rallied late for a homecoming victory against foe Forrest, 8-7.

Watertown started its final drive with 2:53 left in the game and scored with less than 30 seconds remaining as Heath Price scrambled for 5 yards to put the Purple Tigers down one point.

Coach Gavin Webster called a timeout to decide whether to attempt a routine extra point kick, which would force overtime if good, or go for the win with a two-point attempt.

“We had our momentum. I had a few coaches on my side that said let’s do it,” Webster said.

Price followed his blocks to the end zone to give Watertown its only lead of the night and final score of 8-7. Troy Turner gave Forrest its only score on the team’s first possession of the game.

Between the first and final score, the two teams combined for seven fumbles – two inside the red zone for Forrest – and Watertown couldn’t string together enough plays to pull within a tie.

“We started getting our rhythm it seemed like the second or third series, but we couldn’t score,” Webster said. “Guys kept fighting, kept believing and we finally made some plays.”

The big plays came on the final drive as Webster, bothered by a shoulder injury, found Price, who also experienced pain the final frame, for a 12-yard gain to place the Tigers on their own 25 yard line.

Webster found Brandon Allison two plays later for a 67-yard gain to put the Tigers in the red zone for the first time in the game. Following a penalty, Webster found Allison for an 11-yard gain to set up Price’s winning score.

Keon Dotson sacked Forrest quarterback Josh Meglis to seal the win for Watertown on the following possession.

Watertown will travel to Westmoreland on Friday for what Webster described as a “tough, big” region game. Kickoff is at 7 p.m.
