Cha-ching: Wildcats ring up first win 38-28

GLADEVILLE — Pick-6s were ringing up like firecrackers Friday night.

But after John Overton’s Chrisanty Martin returned two interceptions for touchdowns, Wilson Central’s DeMarius McBroom’s 65-yard pick and score off a deflection early in the fourth quarter put the Wildcats ahead and the home team pulled away for their first win of the season 38-28.

After McBroom’s interception return, running back Ries Adkisson scored on two 1-foot runs, the latter coming off a leaping interception by Kalib Graves, to build a 38-21 lead.

Overton quarterback Sam Mast quickly drove his team down the field to a 33-yard touchdown to Samari Burns with 1:18 left. But Jose Bravo’s onside kick failed to roll the necessary 10 yards, enabling Central to run out the clock as the Wildcats climbed to 1-3 for the season.

“Turnovers are huge, no matter which side of the ball it is,” Wildcats coach Brad Dedman said. “We gave away some takeaways as well. But the ones we got were huge.”

In addition to the pick-6 Central’s defense also scored a safety when it gang-tackled Tyrone Sanders in the end zone to break a 7-7 tie 8:37 before halftime.

But Mast’s 9-yard touchdown run put Overton, which tied the score on Martin’s 40-yard pick and score, in front 14-9 going into halftime despite being outgained in total yards 223-78.

“Giving up touchdowns when you have the ball is hard to overcome,” Dedman said. “Somehow, we were able to overcome it. I’m not exactly sure how.”

Central, which missed a field goal at the end of a productive opening drive, got a fumble recovery by Dawson Ray to set up Hubbell’s 4-yard scoring flip to Garrett Todd in the corner of the end zone for a 7-0 lead.

It appeared the Wildcats had a chance to re-take the lead before halftime when, on a play which began with 13 seconds left, Hubbell’s 41-yard heave was taken by McBroom on a jump ball at the Overton 4. But the officials said the clock ran out, despite the vehement protestations of the Central coaches, by the end of the play before it could be stopped.

For the second straight game, a more determined Central team came out of the locker room in the second half, stopping Overton cold. But Martin found nothing but grass for the 74 yards between him and the end zone on his second interception to open a 21-9 lead.

“The thing at the end of the half kind of helped us with (the fast second-half start),” Dedman said. “Our guys responded well after halftime. Our defense responded well. I’m just proud of our overall group.”

The Wildcats came back with Ries Adkisson capping an 80-yard drive with a 3-yard touchdown run to pull within 21-16 late in the third quarter.

Central, which has operated a no-huddle spread this season, placed more emphasis on the running game this time. Zay Kern carried the ball 23 times for 129 yards as the Wildcats collected 222 of their

451 yards on the ground. Hubbell hit 15 of 27 passes for 229 yards.

“I’m just proud of our guys up front,” Dedman said. “We were able to run the football and our offensive line did a heck of a job.”

Central will try to build on the win next Friday as the Wildcats attempt to do something which hasn’t been accomplished in 2017 - score on and beat Mt. Juliet. Kickoff at MJHS will be at 7 p.m.
