Wildcats win region championship

HENDERSONVILLE — Wilson Central’s boys won the Region 5-AAA championship Thursday at Sanders Ferry Park and punched their ticket to the TSSAA State Championships.

All five Wildcats finished in the top 15 and four in the top six.

Nathan Peterson finished second with a time of 16:09, followed one second behind by Joel Barlow. John Elrod was fourth with 16:26 and Baylor Franklin sixth in 16:35. Sophomore Russell Riggan finished in 17:33, sophomore Chris Farmer was 23rd in 17:54 and Grant Pody 28th in 17:59.

Central’s girls finished seventh, led by Nicole Esslinger’s 17th-place finish. Maris Phifer was 19th with her personal-best 22:47. Olivia Fanning was 41st, Ellie Humphrey 46th, Alexis Garcia 51st, Mackenzie Abgit-Hansen 58th and Abigail Bennett 71st.

The TSSAA Championships will be held next Saturday at the Steeplechase in Nashville.
