GALLATIN – Sumner Spay Neuter Alliance is set to hold the seventh annual Pedal for Paws cycling event April 15.

The ride is the largest annual fundraiser for the Sumner County non-profit organization, and it begins at 8 a.m. at The Gallatin Civic Center.

Pedal for Paws will have more than 400 cyclists riding in their annual community event with cyclists attending from all over Middle Tennessee.

“We are thrilled with the response to this year’s event. With every cyclist who participates, it means one more animal gets fixed which prevents additional unwanted litters,” said Sara Felmlee, program director of SSNA.

Proceeds from the annual cycling event are earmarked for SSNA’s Community Assistance Fund, which enables pet owners who don’t have the financial resources to spay or neuter their pet, so the low-cost is waived altogether.

The nonprofit sees individuals, families and many senior citizens who live on a tight, fixed income or simply do not have the financial capability to pay for a spay or neuter surgery.

“Pedal for Paws raises money and awareness for a very critical need within our community – the importance of spaying and neutering dogs and cats to save lives,” Felmlee said. “The annual event has raised tens of thousands of dollars to provide surgeries for pets in our community whose pet owners would not have otherwise been able to afford the much needed service. The response to our event has been overwhelming and we appreciate everyone’s support to help us continue our mission.”

Sumner Spay Neuter Alliance has performed over 47,000 surgeries since opening in July 2011. Since SSNA’s opening, Sumner County Animal Control has seen a 31percent reduction in shelter intake and euthanasia is down 41 percent, which the SSNA says is directly related to the spaying and neutering efforts.
