Sweeney named OVC Freshman of the Year
On a week in which his alma mater will be playing for a high school state championship, Lee Sweeney was named Ohio Valley Conference Freshman of the Year, the league announced Tuesday.
The Tennessee Tech quarterback, who starred at Friendship Christian two years ago, led the OVC in total passing yards (2,292), yards per game (208.4), total offense (206.1 yards per game) and touchdowns (17) while also ranking fourth in pass efficiency rating at 113.4.
The 6-3, 220-pounder threw for over 200 yards five times, including a high of 437 (a school record) against Southeast Missouri. He also set Tech single-game marks with 57 attempts, 46 completions and 437 total yards against the Redhawks.
Sweeney, also a second-team All-OVC selection, is the first Golden Eagle to be named league Freshman of the Year.
