Lady Bears put Portland offense in deep freeze

MT. JULIET — Playing a night earlier than scheduled due to an impending ice storm, Mt. Juliet's girls put Portland's offense on ice in a 45-20 triumph Thursday night.
The Lady Bears led 12-2 following the first quarter, 24-7 at halftime and 36-16 going into the fourth as they remained solidly in the District 9-AAA lead at 9-1, 16-6 for the season.
Forward Ronjanae DeGray led the Lady Bears with 21 points while center Sally McCabe added 18. Tyia Waller and Raeyana DeGray each dropped in three.
No one scored in double figures for Portland.
Mt. Juliet will play host to Beech at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday. The Lady Buccaneers, coached by former Cumberland player Kari Maddox Douglas, handed the Lady Bears their only district loss earlier this month.
Golden Bears blow out Panthers with big third quarter, Gilbert scores 23
MT. JULIET — Mt. Juliet's boys turned back Portland's challenge with a big third quarter in a 64-44 victory Thursday night.
The Golden Bears led 17-10 following the first quarter before Portland climbed to within 33-29 by halftime. But a 17-4 third period widened the lead to 50-33 as Mt. Juliet moved to 11-10 for the season and 6-4 in District 9-AAA.
Hunter Gilbert drained three of Mt. Juliet's five three-pointers in leading all scorers with 23 points. Nolan Chowbay added 11 and John Mark Bell 10 while James Womack supplied eight, Reagan Johnson six, Thomas Sharpe five and Austin Brown a free throw.
Kedrick Howard hit two of Portland's five triples in pacing the Panthers with 17 points.
Mt. Juliet will play host to Beech on Tuesday night.
