Hayes' tie-breaking three leads MJ to Baird sweep

MT. JULIET —Joey Hayes hit a tiebreaking three-pointer with less than two minutes to play Monday night, lifting Mt. Juliet's boys past Walter J. Baird 38-34 at Tommy Martin Gym.

Earlier, Mt. Juliet's girls had no trouble with visiting Walter J. Baird in a 58-15 victory.

The Golden Bears led 13-11 following the first quarter, trailed 23-20 at halftime and were back in front 30-28 going into the fourth. The Blue Devils were up 33-30 with about 2:30 left before Hayes' triple broke a 34-34 tie.

Mt. Juliet's 6-foot-4 post Trey Pruitt pumped in 14 points while Tre Sanders scored eight, Hayes six [including five in the fourth], Tony Thompson and Jaden White four each and Hunter Tudor three.

Vince Floyd finished with 11 points and five rebounds from inside for Baird while Lathon Whittington supplied seven points and six rebounds. DeMarcus Williams scored six points. Mike Jones took down eight rebounds as he and Jakeese Turner each scored three. KeShawn Davis finished with five rebounds as he and Ryan Smith scored two points apiece.

Baird will bring an 0-2 record into Monday's 6 p.m. double header against visiting Rockvale.

The Lady Bears led 22-0 following the first quarter and 36-7 at halftime as they improved to 2-0.

Point guard Manarko Woods hit all 11 of her shots from the floor, including a three-pointer, in leading the Lady Bears with 24 points while Tavia Bell knocked in 4 of her 6 shots on her way to nine. Posts Allison Mayeux, Katherine Bean and Madeline Greenwood each scored six while Katie Schultz tossed in two and Sydney Throneberry a free throw.

Hunter McGowan's eight points led the Devilettes while Jayla Davis threw in three and Rebekah Merrell and Hannah Averitt two apiece.

Mt. Juliet will travel to LaVergne on Monday for a 6 p.m. twinbill.

Winfree Bryant soars past Friendship

Winfree Bryant's girls wore out visiting Friendship Christian 49-14 Thursday night.

Afterward, the Aviators flew past the Commanders 51-18 to complete the sweep.

Samantha Newton notched 14 points and Hailey Pittman 10 for the Lady Aviators while Caleah Shannon scored seven, Kayleigh Calvo and Emily Hines five each, Ashlyn Pittman four and Maleigha Oldham and Emily Sword two apiece for first-year coach Aaron Tomlinson, an FCS graduate.

Rebecca Petross put in nine points for Friendship while Kendall Tipton finished with four and Sarah Terry two.

The Aviators soared to a 28-4 first-quarter lead and went into halftime ahead 37-9 as they improved to 2-1.

Joe Greenwood led 11 Winfree Bryant scorers with nine points while Xavier Brand and Anthony Haffner each added eight, Brett Hutto six, Ali Talley and Gregory Elliott four apiece, Victor Sanchez and Blake Meadors three each and Elijah Terry and Wesley Elliott two apiece.

Brady Stovall led all scorers with 13 points in the post for Friendship while Hanley Sobieszczyk supplied three and Ethan Bult two.

Winfree Bryant will travel to Southside on Monday for a 6 p.m. double header.

Southside boys pull away from Carroll-Oakland

Southside's boys emerged from a back-and-forth first half Thursday night to pull away from host Carroll-Oakland 52-40.

The Eagles were up 12-11 following the first quarter before Southside snuck in front 23-22 by halftime. The Saints opened a 35-31 advantage going into the fourth as they improved to 4-1.

Posts Cole McCorkle and Adam Williams each threw in 13 points and wing Dawson Hamilton had 10 for Southside. Ethan Shelton scored seven, Ray Coggins four, Gannon Starnes and Kennan Ward two apiece and Nick Sanders a free throw.

Jarred Bradshaw buried a pair of three-pointers in leading Carroll-Oakland with 14 points while point guard Noah Mulaski threw in 13 and center Cameron Oliver added nine. Nick Anderson and Eli Teel each chipped in a pair.

Southside will play host to Winfree Bryant on Monday night with the girls tipping off at 6 p.m.

Tigerettes roar past MJCA

MT. JULIET — Watertown's undefeated girls had no trouble with Mt. Juliet Christian in a 45-10 triumph Thursday night.

Afterward, Watertown's boys rolled to a 42-17 triumph.

The Tigerettes led 11-3 following the first quarter, 20-5 at halftime and 42-9 through three as they took their sixth win of the season.

Lauren Robertson racked up a pair of three-pointers in leading all scorers with 17 points for Watertown while fellow guard Mya Huddleston tossed in 10. Mya Gaines added eight points, Brenna Luttrell five, Victoria Patterson a three and Claire Edwards two.

Sara Stilts scored five points for Mt. Juliet Christian while Marcella Galliore and Caitlyn Smith each tossed in two and Bobbie Ann Armstrong a free throw in the Lady Saints' season opener.

The Purple Tigers roared to an 8-3 first-quarter lead, were up 19-11 at halftime and 33-13 through three as they climbed to 5-1.

Tyriq Love had the hot hand for Watertown with 15 points, including a pair of three-pointers, while point guard Seth Price popped in 11. Austin Lasater finished with five, Brady Swann four, Preston Tomlinson a three and Vonte Bates, Rusty Staats, Kaleb Parisher and Nathaniel Gutierrez a free throw apiece.

Bailey Jones notched nine points and Alex Pittman and Logan Anderson four apiece for the Saints, who will host McClain Christian at 6 p.m. today in a boys-only date.

Watertown will go to Smithville on Monday for a 6 p.m. tipoff at DeKalb Middle.
