Greene named TSWA Pitcher of the Week

Cumberland’s Kevin T. Greene earned Tennessee Sports Writers Association Baseball Pitcher of the Week accolades for his performance last week for the Bulldogs.

Greene tossed seven shutout innings against NCAA Division II Union University, allowing just two hits with one walk and 11 strikeouts. The lefthander retired the first eight hitters of the game before allowing a walk and a single. He then set down 11 in a row before giving up a single in the seventh inning. The Knoxville native struck out the final two batters of the game to finish off the one-hour, 31-minute affair.

Greene is 2-0 with a 1.35 earned-run-average in 13.1 innings for the Bulldogs this season, allowing just two total runs with three walks and 13 strikeouts. Opponents are batting just .152 against the junior.

Cumberland will open Mid-South Conference action this weekend with a three-game series at Woody Hunt Stadium against No. 20 Georgetown College.

Pace earns TSWA honors

Cumberland’s Jessica Pace was named the Tennessee Sports Writers Association Women’s Basketball Player of the Week after scoring a career-best 26 points and posting her sixth double-double of the season in a pair of games last week for the Bulldogs.

The Nashville native registered 13 points, eight rebounds and two assists in a 61-59 overtime loss to No. 14 Shawnee State last Thursday, but the senior rebounded with one of the best outings of her career on Senior Day.

Pace made 9 of 12 shots and was 8-for-14 at the foul line for her career-best 26 points, adding 11 rebounds against Rio Grande. It was the eighth double-figure rebounding game of the year for the former Hillsboro High School star and the 17th contest this season in 24 games played in which she scored in double figures.

She leads the Bulldogs in points (12.9) and rebounds (8.1) and ranks second on the club in assists (2.2) per game.

Cumberland, 25-2 overall this season and 16-2 in Mid-South Conference play, is currently ranked No. 5 in the nation. CU will play at Bluefield on Saturday and end the regular season Feb. 25 against the University of the Cumberlands.
