Facebook fuels friendly wager

There’s nothing like a little wager between friends to heat up the competition.
In a seemingly unlikely duel, Lebanon’s Jason Moles, owner of Gardens on Main, and Shawn Smith, owner of The Jewelers, are in a race to find out who can get 2,000 Likes for their respective Facebook pages first.
And Smith really hopes he wins – otherwise, he’ll have to show up to a Lebanon City Council meeting wearing a wedding dress and flip-flops.
Surprisingly, Smith picked the terms.
“It just seemed like the funniest thing in my head at that particular moment in time,” said Smith.
The gauntlet was thrown Saturday evening after Moles promised on Facebook that he would shave his head if the Gardens on Main Facebook page garnered 2,000 Likes by the end of the year.
“This was kind of something that we just said ‘let’s try something totally off the wall to get people talking,’” said Moles.
Smith, a fellow small-business owner and longtime friend of Moles, saw the post and ran with it.
“When I saw that, I figured ‘well, why not up the ante a little bit?’” said Smith.
If Gardens on Main garners 2,000 Likes before The Jewelers, Smith will be stepping out bridal style.
“I don’t have any hair, so I can’t really use that to my advantage,” said Smith.
Mole, however, will shave his head regardless of winner.
“It doesn’t bother me,” said Moles, who usually wears his hair closely cropped – but never bald. “It’s just hair.”
Smith hopes he can raise the ante even more.
“I have a feeling before it’s all over with I’m going to talk [Moles] into doing something a little more extravagant,” said Smith.
Moles and Smith both said they’ve seen huge responses to their little wager.
As of Tuesday, Gardens on Main had 458 Likes and The Jewelers had 519 Likes.
Moles originally targeted 2,000 Likes by the end of the year, but his wife, Rhonda, upped the ante even further by pushing the deadline instead to March 20.
“Our weekly reach [on Facebook] has grown 638.35 percent in three days,” said Moles.
“We’ve actually already upped our Likes on our page by about 100 or more, just in a couple days,” said Smith. “[Moles] has kind of gained on us, but we’re trying to stay ahead of him a little bit.”
Moles directly credits the competition for the growth in the Gardens on Main’s Facebook following.
“It’s such a different thing that we’re doing,” said Moles, “where we said ‘okay, if you just Like our page, you’re going to get somebody to shave their head. Or you’re going to get somebody to go to a city council meeting wearing flip-flops and a wedding dress – and oh yeah, he’s a man.’”
“I’m kind of hoping I don’t have to pick up a dress,” said Smith.
