Committee to explore expanding school board
Feb 08, 2013 8:10 pm
The Wilson County Education Committee will meet Monday to begin exploration of expanding the five-member county school board.
Commissioner Annette Stafford first broached the issue at the committee's last meeting.
Stafford said she heard from numerous parents concerned all areas of the county are not adequately represented on the board. She also said several surrounding counties have larger school boards to serve much smaller populations.
Stafford said Monday's meeting was a chance for the discussion to begin.
"We're going to open it up and talk about it," she said. "I really want the county commissioners to be there, so it can be a work session with the commissioners and the committee."
Wilson Director of Schools Mike Davis said the idea to expand the school board didn't come from him or from the board, and he thinks it isn't necessary.
"I don't see a need for that, but that's not up to me," Davis said. "There are boards where each member serves larger populations than our board members do."
For Davis, bigger doesn't equate better.
"I don't think more government is better," he said. "It's hard enough to get five people to agree. I don't see how more board members would make it easier."
Stafford said if there is a plan to expand the board she would like to see the commission petition to the state for a private act to make it so. Any decisions about if or how to expand the board will be made by the full commission and ultimately decided by the state legislature.
Stafford emphasized Monday's meeting is just to put the idea on the table and get input from people involved. She said she has received nothing but positive feedback about the idea to expand the board.
"I haven't received one negative comment," Stafford said. "I've only heard from one school board member who wanted to know if he had done anything to make me want this, but I told him it was just because of the continuing growth of the county."
The Education Committee will meet Monday at 6 p.m. in the commission room at the courthouse.
