Cowan hits five 3-pointers to lead CU ladies

RIO GRANDE, Ohio — Casie Cowan hit five 3-pointers and scored 22 points off the bench, leading five players in double figures and Cumberland cruised to a 92-56 victory over the University of Rio Grande in the Mid-South Conference opener for both teams Thursday night.
The Lady Bulldogs (5-0, 1-0) take on second-ranked Shawnee State at 1 p.m. Central Time today in the back end of the long road trip to start conference play.
Cumberland shot 57 percent from the field in the game and made nine 3-pointers. TaCouya Allen netted 13 points, Lebanon's London Elie added 12 and Jessica Pace and Briannica Tye both recorded 11 points while Pace and Elie each grabbed seven rebounds.
CU started fast in the contest, with six points from Elie, a 3-point play by Pace and a 3-pointer from Tye giving the visitors a 12-4 advantage. The Red Storm (2-2, 0-1) cut the deficit to 16-13 behind seven straight points from Ciara Herring and a bucket by Shardai Morrison-Fountain, but the Bulldogs responded with a 40-10 run over the final 12 minutes of the half to take a 56-23 advantage.
Eight players scored for the Lady Bulldogs during the stretch, which started with a trifecta from Allen and ended with eight consecutive points by Cowan, including two 3-pointers. Elie added six points and Yalonda Davis scored five while Allen hit another 3-pointer.
CU stretched its lead to as many as 49 points midway through the second half.
Davis finished with nine points and four assists and no CU player saw more than 25 minutes of action in the game.
