Commanders score in three phases to finish 9-1

Friendship Christian achieved its goal of 9-1 and likely bye in the first round of the Class 2A playoffs Friday night as the Commanders rolled past visiting Monterey 43-16 at Pirtle Field.
FCS shot out to a 28-0 first-quarter lead as defense and special teams produced almost as many points as the offense.
Hunter Watts hauled in touchdown passes of 17 and 22 yards from A.J. Long for a 14-0 lead. Dylan Hodges then returned a punt 37 yards to the house before Watts ran an interception 50 yards for the 28-0 margin.
Linebacker Gage Bentley returned a fumble 46 yards to make it 35-0 going into halftime.
Monterey, which has designs on a 1A playoff bid at 5-5, scored in the third quarter on Taylor Raines' 62-yard pass from Jesse Raines and in the fourth on Dillon Stults' 84-yard kick return set up by Steven Hollis' 65-yard scoring run for Friendship.
FCS finished with 184 yards rushing and 86 passing.
