From staff reports
GLADEVILLE — Wilson Central's boys broke Antioch's press as the Wildcats beat the visiting Bears 66-54 Thursday night.
The Wildcats led 13-9 following the first quarter, 33-21 at halftime and 46-35 through three as they improved to 3-0.
"We tried a lot of different combinations," Coach Troy Bond said after playing 10 Wildcas. "We're still trying to figure some things.
"Our starters in particular played really well. We got after it defensively. We shared the ball well, had a good tempo, a good rhythm with that bunch."
Jacob Williams poured in 20 points, Blake Huffman 14 and Ben Palmer 13 for Central. Matthew Hall had eight while Jon Rosshirt, who Bond credited with breaking the press, scored seven, Andre Corder two and Deante Miller and A.J. Franklin a free throw apiece.
Rashid Gordon totaled 24 points and Raekwon Hosey 13 for Antioch.
The Wildcats, who beat Northeast and East Ridge last week in a classic at Siegel, will travel to Benton, Ky., for the Marshall County Hoopfest on Saturday. Central will face host Marshall County at 4 p.m.
Antioch girls rally past Lady Wildcats
GLADEVILLE — Antioch's girls overtook Wilson Central in the fourth quarter of a 51-46 victory Thursday night.
The Lady Wildcats led 16-13 following the first quarter, 26-18 at halftime and 37-33 through three.
But Janise Davis drained four of her five three-pointers in the second half in leading the visiting Lady Bears with 21 points while backcourt partner D'Toria Fowler finished with 12.
"We gave [Davis] too many looks," Lady Wildcat coach Bud Brandon said after Central slipped to 2-2. "She hit a couple and that elevated them.
"They are a very explosive team that scores quick... They made their run in the fourth. They played with more energy and at a higher level than we did. We had some turnovers. Hopefully, it's a game we can learn from. Antioch's the best team we've played."
Rachel Bean totaled 21 points for Central while center Dominique St. Louis added 11. Autumn Hopkins scored seven, Sydney Comer five and Hailey Averitt two free throws.
"We did some things well, but we've got some things we've got to improve in," Brandon said. "When we do that, we'll have a fine basketball team."
