Nov 22, 2012 12:00 am
WILLIAMSBURG, Ky. – Josette Campbell scored a season-high 20 points and TaCouya Allen netted 15 and 10 rebounds, as Cumberland started the game with a 25-4 run and never looked back in a 71-45 victory over 18th-ranked University of the Cumberlands here Tuesday night at the O. Wayne Rollins Center.
The Bulldogs (7-0, 3-0 Mid-South) remained undefeated in conference play with their third straight road win after taking down the University of Rio Grande and second-ranked Shawnee State this past weekend.
Cumberland completely dominated the first half, holding the Patriots to 24 percent shooting (5-of-21) and forcing 16 turnovers, which the Bulldogs turned into 15 points. Campbell led the attack with 10 points, hitting two long-range jumpers (with her foot on the line both times) and three floaters in the lane.
Allen got the squad off to a good start, netting five of the first seven and seven of the first 15 points for the visitors. Cumberland also held UC without a field goal for eight minutes of the period, forcing four turnovers and 11 consecutive misses before Ashley Mullins ended the drought with a bucket at 10:11 of the period. By then the Bulldogs had opened a 17-4 advantage and 3-pointers from Yalonda Davis and Casie Cowan gave CU the 25-4 edge.
The Bulldogs would push the lead to as many as 24 points on a jumper by Campbell late in the period and led 33-12 at the break.
Jill Herman made three free throws and Julie Haye added a basket and two foul shots early in the second half for the Patriots (5-2, 1-2), cutting the Bulldog lead to 41-24 with 14:58 remaining, but London Elie made the first of three second-half field goals and Campbell drained a 3-pointer from the corner and UC never got any closer.
Campbell made 9-of-10 field goals while Allen connected on 8-of-9 free throws for her first double-double of the season. Jessica Pace added nine points while Briannica Tye had seven points, four assists and four steals and Davis netted seven points off the bench.
Ashley Mullins led the Patriots with 12 points and Dace Bicane recorded eight points and eight boards. UC shot just 32 percent for the game, including 2-of-13 from 3-point range.
Cumberland will play again on the road next Tuesday at Spelman in Atlanta before returning home to face Bluefield in Mid-South Conference play on Nov. 29 at 6 p.m.
