Bulldogs split two at Southern Poly

MARIETTA, Ga. — Anthony Gomez worked five innings for the win and Cumberland plated five unearned runs in the second inning en route to an 8-3 win in the second game after dropping a 4-3 decision in nine innings in the opener in Saturday’s doubleheader at Southern Poly.
Gomez (1-0) allowed one run on two hits in five innings for the Bulldogs (2-1), walking four and striking out three in his Cumberland debut. Nick Conley and Jesse Coe tossed the final two innings, as Cumberland won 2-of-3 in the series over the Hornets (6-3) to start the season.
Josciel Veras drove in two runs and Cory Urquhart scored twice in the win, but a two-out fielding error by SPSU second baseman Reggie Weatherford allowed the Bulldogs to plate five unearned runs in the second inning and take control of the contest.
Tyler Anderson scored on the error and another run came across on a single by Robert Gonzalez before Cumberland plated three runs with bases loaded walks, ending the day for Southern Poly starter Matt Adams in the process.
Ian Huss singled home a run and Richie Seaton plated another with a sacrifice fly in the fourth and Veras drove home the final run for CU with a groundout in the fifth. The Bulldogs led 8-1 before the Hornets scored twice in the sixth.
Adams gave up five unearned runs on just two hits with five walks in 1.2 innings. SPSU walked 12 batters in the contest and allowed only five hits.
Urquhart’s two-out single down the rightfield line plated Chris Hall in the seventh inning of the first game, another unearned run for the Bulldogs. The run tied the contest at three after an RBI single by Anderson made it a one-run game in the sixth.
Jordan Williams drove home the game-winning run for SPSU in the ninth after Josue Quinones was hit to leadoff the inning.
Evin Einhardt tossed six innings for the Bulldogs in the contest and got no decision, giving up three runs on seven hits with two walks and five strikeouts. Kevin P. Greene (0-1) took the loss, allowing one run on three hits in 2.1 innings.
Nick Blount picked up the win for the Hornets in relief, striking out nine batters in 3.2 innings while giving up three hits and two unearned runs. SPSU starter Darin Wiltgen worked 5.1 innings, allowing one run on three hits with three punchouts.
Cumberland managed only six hits in the game while striking out 12 times.
The Bulldogs started quickly in the first game, scoring a run in the top of the first when Gonzalez led off with a double down the rightfield line and scored on a pair of groundouts.
The Hornets took the lead in the third with a two-out rally, as DeMarcus Tidwell, Weatherford and Williams all singled to load the bases before a two-run single to center from Tyler Roach.
SPSU added another run in the fourth after a leadoff double from Khirus Ware, a walk to Kendall Wehrle and a bunt single by Anthony Iglesias loaded the bases. A sacrifice fly from Quinones gave the home team a 3-1 edge.
Cumberland cut into the deficit in the sixth when Veras struck out but reached on a throwing error by the catcher, Iglesias, and Craig Monson was hit. Anderson plated the run with a single through the right side, making it 3-2 Southern Poly.
The Bulldogs tied the game in the seventh thanks to a throwing error by third baseman Wehrle, allowing Hall to reach, and Hall stole second with two outs. Urquhart then singled down the rightfield line, knotting the contest at three.
In the ninth Quinones was hit and Dalton Martinez reached on a bunt single before a sacrifice from Tidwell put runners at second and third. Weatherford was intentionally walked to load the bases, setting up the infield single by Williams to plate the winning run.
In the second game Anderson started the second inning with a single and with two outs Tyler Alford walked. Justin Johnston reached on the fielding error by Weatherford, allowing Anderson to score, and a single through the leftside by Gonzalez plated another run.
Urquhart walked to load the bases before run-scoring free passes to Veras and Monson chased Adams from the game. Reliever Kevin Bibler also walked Anderon, forcing in another run, as the Bulldogs sent 11 men to the plate in the inning.
In the fourth Urquhart singled and Veras and Monson both walked, loading the bases again, before an RBI single through the left side from Huss. Seaton plated another run with a sacrifice fly for a 6-0 CU edge.
Roach homered to rightfield with one out in the bottom of the fourth for SPSU’s first run of the game.
CU got the run back in the fifth when Johnston walked and Gonzalez reached on a throwing error by Wehrle at third base. Veras’ RBI groundout scored Johnston for an 8-1 lead.
Southern Poly plated two runs in the sixth after Wehrle walked with one out and Chris Dykes and Trey Malong both drew two-out free passes. Tidwell drove in both runs with a single to left for the final runs of the game.
Cumberland will the home schedule Wednesday with a 2 p.m. contest against Freed-Hardeman and will take on Union University and Indiana University-Southeast next weekend.
