Lady Dawgs pick up pace to beat Spring Hill
Cumberland University's No. 13 Lady Bulldogs defeated Spring Hill College 81-69 Friday night to advance to the finals of the Rosa Stokes Classic at the Dallas Floyd Center.
The win moved Cumberland to 4-0 for the season.
"We got out a little slow," Cumberland coach Clint Mason said. "We were down by four or five points midway through the first half."
The Lady Bulldogs regained the momentum and led at the break 40-27.
Cumberland picked up the pace in the second half and was rotating players from the bench. Mason noted his bench players outscored Spring Hill's 32-8.
"In the second half, we played everybody," Mason said.
Turnovers were a big help for the Lady Bulldogs, who forced Spring Hill into 25 giveaways and converted those into 24 points.
Renae Williams led Cumberland with 24 points, Tamika Hall tossed in 11 and Kristin Kirkland added 10.
Cumberland will face No. 5 ranked Houston Baptist in the finals at 3 p.m. today. It's a rematch of the 2005 NAIA National Tournament second-round game won by Baptist 86-59 in Jackson.
