It was written in the 1960s, but the song has the ability to make anyone smile. The tune, "Happy Together," written by founding member Mark Volman of the band The Turtles, is a classic.

Mt. Juliet native Katie Boyd, 21, is a member of a special class as a "roadie" for the hit 1960s band as part of the "Happy Together Tour."

Boyd, a student at Belmont, was one of 10 students to join Volman in the East Coast tour that began June 14. The tour's classroom and schedule encompasses one tour bus, a few hotel rooms, long hours and many stages for two and a half weeks and a grade, according to Volman.

Boyd is an audio engineering technology major and a music business minor. She’s excited to be part of the adventure.

"I think this class will be one of the most important classes that I take at Belmont because it will involve some serious hands-on experience, and in the music industry. I believe having opportunities like this are invaluable to our education and future career path.

"Working in a situation where we are expected to learn the responsibilities of various roles on a tour production team will also provide some unique insight and a broad knowledge of how a tour like this is structured."

Staff advisor Lucas Boto will join Volman on the tour. They said the students will work with touring artists and crew professionals in the areas of tour management, stage management, audio engineering, tour accounting and merchandise sales.

Boyd, along with her fellow students, will learn about loading, setup, tear down and load out. They will also gain knowledge about revenue flow from the music consumer and how to tour as a performer.

"Only at Belmont do students get such a unique opportunity to experience the world of tour management, live production and what life on the road looks like before embarking on their career paths," said Volman. "I'm excited to teach them what I know outside normal classroom space and to see what I'll learn from them. Inevitably, their energy will add to the tour experience for the performers as well."

Part of the tour will include several stage performances with Floe and Eddie, Chuck Negron (formerly with Three Dog Night), Gary Puckett and The Union Gap, Gary Lewis and the Playboys and Mark Lindsay (former singer of Paul Revere and the Raiders).

Some of the tour dates include Nashville, Lebanon, Beverly, Mass. and Pennsylvania.

The touring classroom is part of the learning opportunities at Belmont's Curb College of Music Business and Entertainment.
