Mary Roberts was nearly speechless Tuesday when she received the keys to her new car she won through the Tennessee Lottery.
But the Dixson Springs resident had plenty of questions for Wilson County Motors sales associate Louis Brenkman about what button did what and how the new Chevrolet Camaro 1SS could even talk and make phone calls for her.
“I’m excited,” she said. “It’s unbelievable. This thing talks to you.”
Mary Roberts, 55, won the car through a second-chance drawing held by the Tennessee Lottery. She entered a non-winning Camaro instant ticket into the drawing, and her name was drawn in February in a final grand prize drawing held after the game ended.
“I didn’t believe it,” she said. “I still can’t hardly believe it.”
Just as excited was her husband, Lewis Roberts, who said the only new car he’s ever owned was also a Camaro he bought brand new off the lot in 1985. But Lewis Roberts was most impressed with the Tennessee Lottery officials picking up the tab for everything, including taxes on the more than $50,000 vehicle.
“They paid for everything,” Lewis Roberts, 58, said. “They even bought the tag. I’m glad they paid it.”
Mary Roberts even got to pick out the blue ray metallic and black interior colors.
“Lord, if it has a phone in it, I will never get her out of it,” said Lewis Roberts, who is an iron worker with Local 492 out of Nashville.
Mary Roberts, who works as a care provider for an elderly woman, said she was looking forward to picking up her grandchildren from school Tuesday afternoon in her new ride.
“They don’t know, but they will be excited,” she said.
Just before she drove off in her new Camaro, Mary Roberts gave a warning.
“Jeff Gordon better watch out,” she said.
