Devilettes reach District 7-AAA finals
MURFREESBORO — Lebanon's girls reached the District 7-AAA team finals Monday with 4-1 wins over Warren County and Cookeville at Old Fort Park.
The Blue Devils were ousted in the first round by Oakland 4-1.
The No. 3-seed Devilettes will bring a 12-2 record into today's 4 p.m. final against No. 1 Siegel at Old Fort with only the winner advancing to Region 4-AAA play.
In team tournament play, matches stop when one team has four wins. Both of the Devilettes' matches were decided in singles
Devilette winners against No. 2 Cookeville were Chelsea Fyke over Hope Prescot 7-6 [7-5 in the tiebreaker], 6-4 [after Prescot led 4-1]; sister Courtney Fyke over Ying Fan 6-0, 6-0; Kacey Conatser over Taylor Dukes 7-5, 6-2 and Samantha McElfresh over Daphne Ekmanis 6-2, 6-4.
Cookeville's Corbin Ehlert stopped Sarah Morgan at No. 3 singles 6-4, 6-4.
Winners against No. 6 Warren County were Chelsea Fyke over Katie Campen 3-6, 8-7 [7-4 in the tiebreaker], 6-3; Morgan over Anne Clair Roberts 6-2, 6-3; Conatser over Mio Nakagawa 6-0, 6-1 and McElfresh over Jamie Bush 6-2, 6-1.
Holly Ray racked up Warren County's win over Courtney Fyke at No. 2 6-4, 2-6, 6-4.
Oakland's boys got the decisive win at No. 1 doubles as Ben Thompson and Matt Burnham overcame a 7-4 deficit to outlast Joseph Do and Andrew Puryear 9-8 [7-5 in the tiebreaker].
Singles winners for the Patriots were Rob Wesley over Do 6-2, 6-4; Alex Hoelscher over Puryear 6-3, 6-1 and Burnham over Peter Misaiphon 6-0, 1-6, 6-0.
Ben Fennell picked up Lebanon's win with a 6-1, 6-4 decision over Thompson as the No. 5-seed Blue Devils ended a 5-8 season, though the individual district tournament will be played later. The teams split their regular-season series.
Mt. Juliet Christian edged by Merrol Hyde
HENDERSONVILLE — Merrol Hyde's boys edged Mt. Juliet Christian 4-3 while the girls prevailed 5-4 Monday at Bluegrass Country Club.
The Hawks' Welch twins got the decisive win at No. 2 doubles 8-0 over Caleb Wagler and Ben Brescka.
Singles winners for the Hawks were Judson Lancina over Wagler 8-4, Cole Welch over Sam Anderson 8-1 and Jackson Butler over Brescka 8-1.
Mt. Juliet Christian won at Nos. 1 and 2 singles and No. 1 doubles as the Saints' Josh McKenzie and Andrew Ziady doubled up Alan Wong and Taylor Leath, respectively, 8-4. McKenzie and Ziady then teamed up to beat Wong and Braxton Wilson by the same score.
Merrol Hyde's girls won two of the three doubles matches to prevail.
Winners for the Lady Hawks were Shannon Hargis over Chelsea Mobley 8-1, Crystal Diepp over Hannah Jordan 8-4, Chelsea Williams over Betsy Harris 8-1, Elaina Kiskaddon and Bianca Reid over Mobley and Kate Walker 8-0 and Diepp and Williams over Jordan and Harris 8-4.
The Lady Saints won at Nos. 1-3 singles and No. 1 doubles.
Crystal Harwell handled Kiskaddon 8-1, Walker rolled past Reid 8-3, Cindy Overstreet stopped Melanie Martin 8-2 and Harwell and Overstreet beat Hargis and Martin 8-3.
Mt. Juliet Christian will travel to Greenbrier on Wednesday for a 2 p.m. match.
