Cumberland men top Ohio St.-Mansfield
Dec 04, 2006 12:00 am
Cumberland's Lady Bulldogs pulled out a one-point overtime victory over the University of Mobile 56-55 Friday at the Cumberland Classic held in the Dallas Floyd Recreation Center.
The Lady Bulldogs got some key baskets from senior C'Kala Humes in the extra period to get the win.
"C'Kala came up big in the overtime," Lady Bulldog coach Clint Mason said after Cumberland climbed to 6-1. "She stepped up and made some big shots."
Turnovers were a factor for both squads in the contest, with both teams committing more than 30. Mobile had the slight edge in that area with 31 to Cumberland's 34.
"Anytime you have 34 turnovers and still get a victory, you are very fortunate," Mason added.
Mobile led off the contest with a 6-0 run and Cumberland struggled to recover before coming within two points with just under five minutes to go in the half, 15-17.
Despite the comeback, the Lady Bulldogs went in at the half trailing 25-19.
Cumberland came away with its first lead of the game at 6:42 of the second half. Ewa Bukowska fired in a jump shot to give the Lady Bulldogs a 38-37 advantage.
The lead went back and forth for several minutes before Mobile's Angela Bounds tied the contest at 46 with 1:30 left to play in regulation.
Kari Maddox had a steal with 15 seconds on the clock to send the game into overtime.
"Mobile is a quality opponent," Mason said. "We were fortunate to come away with the win."
For Cumberland, Humes led the way with 13 points. Mariel Ruis added 11 points, Renae Williams tossed in 10, Isabelli Cunico put in six, Ashley Cross had four, Tomika Hall and Julianna Fernandes tossed in three each and Kristen Kirkland, Bukowska and Maddox all had two.
Rheonda Leary led Mobile with 18 points.
The Lady Bulldogs face College of the Ozarks at 4 p.m. today in the second day of the Classic.
