CU sweeps Milligan in season openers
Cumberland opened its tennis season Saturday as the men won 7-2 and the women 8-1 over visiting Milligan, which featured several nationally-ranked players.
"You just never know how the first match of the season is gonna go so it is sometimes hard to prepare yourself, especially when you have several new and untested players," Cumberland coach Bill Riddle said.
CU swept the doubles matches for 3-0 leads.
The Bulldogs started several new players, including Texas Pan American-transfer Roman Shkurpiy of Russia, freshman Mike Basler from Switzerland, Bernardo Kenupe from Brazil and Andrew Williams of England.
Spain's Beatriz Mompo and Lebanon High-graduate Emily Jacobs won their first collegiate matches.
"I am very proud of the girls as they played great together against a good team," said first-year CU women's assistant coach Will Edmonds.
Both Cumberland teams will return to the court Thursday when they travel to Clarksville for afternoon matches at Austin Peay.
