Central girls clip Lady Hawks
GLADEVILLE — A team rated as a favorite to repeat as state champion is not supposed to let a sub-.500 team hang around on their court and Wilson Central didn't Friday.
The Lady Wildcats rolled past visiting Rossview 68-33 in the Region 5-AAA tournament opener.
Central stormed to a 16-5 first-quarter lead and picked up even more steam in the second period, leading 39-9 at halftime behind 66.7-percent shooting. The Lady Wildcats were up 59-11 through three periods before Coach Bud Brandon sat the starters the rest of the way.
Lauren Farmer fired in 5 of 6 three-pointers while center Jasmine Hassell sank 7 of 8 from the post as both finished with 15 points for Central. Forward Tierney Jenkins added 11 points and seven rebounds.
Jessyca Christopher canned a couple of triples on her way to eight points while Sara Williams finished with five, freshman Ashley Parton four, Lauren Wasson and Kelsey McGee three each and Chelsea Burroughs and Katie Tiger two apiece as the Lady Wildcats climbed to 31-3 for the season.
Central advanced to the region semifinals at Beech where the Lady Wildcats will face Dickson County, which ousted Smyrna 62-48, at 6 p.m. Monday.
Amanda Reeves racked up four of her five three-pointers in the fourth quarter to lead Rossview with 17 points as the Lady Hawks completed a 12-18 season.
Central outshot Rossview 51 percent to 29.5 and outrebounded the Lady Hawks 38-26. Jenkins finished with five assists and Williams four.
The two schools will hook up in a rematch at 7 p.m. tonight as the boys' teams meet in their region opener at Central.
