GORDONSVILLE — Watertown’s first-ever varsity match was a three-set home loss to Gordonsville in 2006.

Eleven years later, it took five sets for Watertown to dispatch rival Gordonsville 3-2 Tuesday night in the Region 4-A championship match, giving the Tigerettes their first-ever region title.

The Tigerettes (22-10) rallied from a nine-point fourth-game deficit earlier to overtake East Robertson 3-1 in the semifinal match earlier in the day.

Allie Poston racked up 19 kills in the match, followed by Alaina Johnson with 10, Victoria Patterson with six, Brenna Luttrell and Alexis Haynes with five apiece, Natalie Fountain with three and Sydney Murrell with one.

Poston also led the team in solo blocks with three and assisted blocks with five. Johnson had two solo blocks, and Patterson had one. Haynes had three assisted blocks, and Luttrell had two.

Murrell finished the match with 24 digs, followed by Fountain with 23, Alyssa Bond with 18, Ashlyn Vantrease with 15, Johnson with 14, Patterson with seven, Haynes with six and Luttrell with four.

Bond, Murrell, Vantrease and Patterson each had two aces, and Johnson and Fountain each had one.

Fountain was 23-of-23 from the service line.

Murrell, a sophomore Libero, and Johnson, a senior outside hitter, were named to the All-Region team. Poston, a senior middle blocker, was named the Region 4-A Most Valuable Player.

Watertown will play Thursday at 7 p.m. at home in a sectional against Columbia Academy as the Tigerettes try to take that final step to their first-ever state tournament.

At the helm all 12 seasons has been Brandy Baird Holcomb, a former Cumberland softball player who came to Watertown in 2005 to coach that sport, taking over for Gavin Webster when he became head football coach. The school added volleyball a year later with Baird, not having married yet, assuming the helm. She has guided the Tigerettes to several sectionals, but this will be the first time they won’t have to travel to the Chattanooga area.
