GLADEVILLE — Reigning 6A State runner-up Hendersonville jumped out to an early first quarter lead and never trailed as they defeated Wilson Central 45-7, in the season opener for both teams.
Wilson Central showed resistance early as they held Hendersonville to a field goal on their opening drive, but unraveled as the game continued.
The Wildcats fumbled deep in their own territory two plays after the ensuing kickoff and the Commandos recovered. Three plays later, they recovered a fumble of their own but they fell on it in the Wildcat end zone, resulting in a touchdown.
Central trailed 24-0 at the end of the first quarter, after a pair of Hendersonville touchdowns by senior wide receiver Sam Pete from his classmate Jeremias Elston. Central focused on their running game and did not attempt a pass the entire quarter.
Hendersonville scored again halfway through the second quarter after a 41-yard run by sophomore Terrell Carter, capping off a six-play drive.
Central opened the following drive with a pass attempt from Cody Ray, which was intercepted by the Commando defense. The Wildcats forced the Commandos into a fumble to end the half.
Wilson Central finally put points on the board after a 3-yard run by Weston Rountree halfway through the third quarter.
Hendersonville posted two touchdowns from runs by Jarques Wordlaw and Frankie Small in the same quarter. Wordlaw raced by the Wildcat defense for a 24-yard touchdown and Small pounded his way to a 6-yard touchdown.
Both teams went scoreless in the fourth quarter, as both teams made many substitutions throughout the quarter and the clock didn’t stop for dead balls due to the score margin.
Wilson Central will have host Lavergne at 7 p.m. Friday. Hendersonville hosts Hunters Lane Friday.
