Linda England dies: Lebanon resident Linda England, a pioneer in women's professional fishing, died July 22 at age 67.

England was a standout basketball player at Nashville's Litton High, and spent 20 years on the pro fishing circuit where she became the leading money winner for women anglers.

In 1987 England co-authored a book "Bass on the Line" with Fredda Lee, and the two later were hosts of an area TV fishing show.

England is credited with paving the way for other pro women fishermen.

Trap shoot: Danny Shaw and Kerry Hale both broke 49 of 50 targets to tie for top honors in the weekly trap shoot at the Cedar City Gun Club.

Elk permits: The deadline for applying for a permit for Tennessee's 6th October elk hunt has passed,  and a random draw will be held soon to select the five winners, including one for a Youth Hunt tag. They will be announced by the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency, along with the top bidder on a 6th tag auctioned off on eBay.

The hunt will be held Oct. 20-24.

Last year Lebanon's Mike Graves was drawn for a permit and killed the second-largest elk recorded since the hunts began.

Hunting guides: The 2014 Tennessee Trapping & Hunting Guide will be available in coming weeks at most outdoors outlets.

The publication is free, and contains detailed rules and regulations for the upcoming hunting seasons.

There are no major state-wide changes from last year, but there are some changes involving certain counties. In some Midstate counties, for example, the fall turkey season has been closed. The Hunting Guide provides a county-by-county rundown.

Youth trap team: Wilson County youngsters interested in the shooting sports can sign up for an interscholastic trap-shooting team being organized by Ben Schade.

The Cedar City Straights is open to youngsters age nine through high school, and will compete in state, regional and national competitions. Training will be held at the Cedar City Gun Club. For information call Schade at 615-478-8019.

Wear life jackets: Officials say that approximately 85% of all boating-related drowning victims were not wearing a life jacket when the accident occurred.

Wearing a life jacket is mandatory for youngsters any time the boat is moving, and must be worn by boaters of all ages in waters immediately below dams on the Cumberland River system.
