CLARKSVILLE — When defenses collapse around Mt. Juliet’s powerful inside game, guards have to step up – and Ashley Roby did big time Monday night.

The junior led the Lady Bears’ 54-35 win over Hendersonville with five three-pointers in the Region 5-AAA semifinal at Rossview.

“She was our MVP tonight,” Mt. Juliet coach Chris Fryer said of Roby after his Lady Bears improved to 27-1 and punched tickets for Wednesday’s 7 p.m. final and Saturday night’s sectional. “She handled the ball well. She hit the open shot. She had a lot of our assists to our big girls.”

Speaking of big girls, Sally McCabe scored 16 points while fellow post Raeyana DeGray finished with 15 and twin sister Ronjanae DeGray rounded out the scoring with eight.

“That’s what you hope for every night,” Fryer said. “You don’t want to count on one girl doing all your scoring.”

Mt. Juliet will face host Rossview, a 57-49 winner over Beech in Monday’s later game on Wednesday, whose victor will play host to Saturday’s sectional while the loser goes on the road. The District 10-AAA champion Lady Hawks are 26-2.
