Elk hunt: The fifth permit for participation in Tennessee’s October elk hunt will be auctioned on eBay, with bids taken until July 28.

Since the elk hunt was implemented in 2009, the TWRA has donated one permit to auctioned off, in addition to four permits issued by a random draw.

Proceeds from the winning bid go to a designated organization that assists with conservation causes. This year’s recipient is the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Foundation.

Information about how to place a bid is available on the TWRA website, tnwildlife.org

Applications to be included in the random draw must be submitted by July 24. Again, information on how to apply is available on the TWRA website, or by calling the agency’s headquarters in Nashville.

The elk hunt will be held Oct. 21-25 at the North Cumberland Wildlife Management Area. The area will be divided into five hunting zones, with each hunter assigned to a particular zone.

Also, for the second straight season, a special Youth Hunt elk tag will be issued, again through a random draw.

Hunter-safety reminder: With the fall hunting seasons at hand, the TWRA reminds residents that anyone born after Jan.1, 1969, must complete a Hunter Education Course in order to get a license.

The courses are offered at various periods in most counties. For information about when and they are available consult tnwildlife.org or contact the TWRA office (781-6500) between 8-4:30 on weekdays.

There is a one-time Apprentice License available for those who might neglect completing the Hunter Education Course; they can hunt for one year as long as they are in the company of an adult who has completed the course.

Detailed information about various license requirements and options is available at the TWRA website.

Trap shoot: Danny Shaw hit 48 of 50 targets to win last week’s trap shoot at the Cedar City Gun Club.

Jimmy Jones was top Sub-Junior (44), Lucas Green won Junior (41), and Billy Robb was top Veteran (39). Taylor Bolin and Hunter Satterfield tied for Class B honors.
