Democratic Women awards scholarship

Staff Reports • Dec 17, 2015 at 6:59 PM

The Wilson County Democratic Women recently awarded a scholarship to a graduating senior in Wilson County. The Dorothy McAdoo Memorial Scholarship is awarded based upon essays written on the subject, “The Role of Women in the Political Process.” The winner competed with entrants from across the county.

The scholarship for $500 was awarded to Katlin Eakes, a recent graduate of Lebanon High School. She is the daughter of Christy and Greg Eakes of Lebanon. She will be attending Cumberland University in Lebanon, majoring in Nursing.

This is the 14th year that the Democratic Women have awarded a scholarship, which is open to all graduating seniors in Wilson County. The scholarship was named for Dorothy McAdoo who was a long time member of the Wilson County Democratic Women and served as Treasurer for many years and also served on the Executive Committee for the Wilson County Democratic Party.

The Dorothy McAdoo Scholarship is one of several community outreach projects sponsored by the Democratic Women during the year, including book donations to all three Wilson County Libraries, housewarming gifts at each new Habitat for Humanity home and monthly food donations to the Mt. Juliet Help Center.

The Wilson County Democratic Women meet monthly on the second Tuesday, and everyone is invited to attend. The meetings are held at the Fair Grounds’ Education Building at 6:30 p.m. Contact Annette Stafford at 593-4969 for more information or join us on Facebook.
