Black history will come alive Saturday as the Wilson County Civic League will present a concert in celebration of Black History Month at the Capitol Theatre.
The performance begins at 6:30 p.m.
The event will feature a performance by the Princely Players, an eight-member ensemble in the tradition of the Fisk Jubilee Singers.
"This is the first time that we are doing a theatrical performance as part of our community enrichment for the Civic League," said Marilyn Bryant, an organizer for the event.
The ensemble provides an educational journey of the African American experience from slavery to the civil rights movement.
"The Princely Players have been around since 1967," Bryant said. "They are a troop of singers, actors and do dramatizations of how music influenced the social culture through the years. We are very excited to get them to come."
The group has performed at The Smithsonian, TPAC, Yale University, the Ryman Auditorium and many other locations. They have also been heard on the Nashville Network, BBC, the NPT "Wade in the Water" series and are a part of the Time-Life Civil War Recordings.
"Their songs are in connection with the time frame, gospel music over the centuries, then into black culture and black history in society - blues, jazz, motown," added Bryant.
In addition to the Princely Players performance, a section at the beginning of the evening is devoted to local talent.
"For the opening sections, we will have a variety of community performers. Youth dance groups, a vocal a cappella group, a special community chorus made up of locals from area churches and poetry readings.
"We will also have a running collage of achievements through history in education, medicine, etc., over the centuries where African Americans have influenced society."
The event is open to everyone. Tickets are $15 for adults and $10 for children 12 and under. They are available from the Wilson County Civic League or can be purchased at the door.
