The first children’s version of Lean in Lebanon is set to kick off soon, designed to teach healthy habits, fight childhood obesity and promote fun.
The “Kids Lean in Lebanon” program begins Feb. 8 at 11 a.m. at Sports Village. Sponsored by the Lebanon-Wilson County Chamber of Commerce, the one-month event is modeled after Lean in Lebanon in its second year. The children’s program is geared toward first- through eighth-grade students in Lebanon and three selected Wilson County schools.
“This could become a huge impact on our community,” said Peggy Keel with Sports Village. “If we can influence our children with a desire and an expectation to live a healthy lifestyle, then our whole community will be affected for decades to come.”
Students in the participating schools will receive a flyer explaining the four-week program that meets two weekdays each week at 3:30 p.m. and each Saturday.
“During this time they will be motivated and taught lots of things concerning keeping our bodies the best they can be in a fun way,” Keel said. “Obesity is a huge problem, and we hope to prevent or reverse some of it.”
The cost is $49 per student, payable to the chamber, for the first 100 children who sign up for the program. But the chamber will provide free scholarships to 50 participants using funds from the “Go Johnny Go” program. Those children’s applications should express need for assistance.
On March 8, the last day of the program, the Move Across Wilson family day will be from noon until 2 p.m. at Sports Village.
“At that time children will be recognized for their accomplishment,” Keel said. “Entertainment from all areas of the county will be participating, as well as lots of family fun.”
The Wilson County Health Council and Wilson County and Lebanon Special School District Coordinated School Health will coordinate Kids Lean in Lebanon.
The second Lean in Lebanon for adults will also begin Feb. 8 at Sports Village.
