TBI investigates officer-involved shooting in Lewisburg

At the request of 17th District Attorney Rob Carter, TBI special agents started an investigation into an officer-involved shooting that happened Monday morning in Lewisburg.

At around 10:15 a.m., a call came into dispatch that an individual known to have an active order of protection was at the CW Cuts hair salon in Lewisburg. A few minutes later, another call came in that the individual had a gun.

A Marshall County sheriff’s deputy responded to the scene. Shots were exchanged between the subject, Steven A. Hopwood, 51, and the deputy.

The deputy sustained a non-life-threatening injury and was subsequently taken to the hospital for treatment.

Other deputies arrived at the scene, and Hopwood fired at them, as well. None of those deputies were hit.

A Lewisburg police SWAT team responded to the scene and found Hopwood dead once it entered the building. Officers also found several hostages unharmed in an adjacent room.

The TBI has agents working to gather any and all relevant evidence and interviews in connection to the case and will share findings with the district attorney throughout the process.

Per TBI policy, the agency does not identify the officers involved in these types of incidents and instead refers questions of that nature to their respective departments.
