For more than a year, The Lebanon Democrat assisted the Wilson County Sheriff’s Department in locating and charging the area’s most wanted.
Since Feb. 14, 2013, The Democrat has partnered with the Sheriff’s Office in an effort to apprehend criminals and get the word out about the most wanted people in the county.
The “Most Wanted This Week” section currently runs daily in The Democrat and, according to Sheriff Robert Bryan, has helped the department in catching apparent wanted criminals.
“It has been an asset to our efforts in apprehending persons wanted on active arrest warrants issued in Wilson County,” Bryan said.
Bryan said different types of charges for the listed most wanted have ranged and include parole violations, sex offenses, and other serious felonies, to persons with multiple misdemeanor charges.
“The Wilson County Sheriff’s Office continues to aggressively seek persons wanted on charges or probation violations for crimes against persons, including sex offenders, aggravated assaults and domestic assaults,” Bryan said.
Since the time the most wanted section began, Bryan said 59 photos of wanted people were published, including the most recent, Dewight Corley, on Tuesday. Out of the 59 people’s information published, 45 were men and 14 were women.
Bryan said 44 people have been apprehended of the 59, which equals a 75-percent success rate.
“Many were located as a result of tips called in by readers,” Bryan said. “A few turned themselves in after seeing their photo in the paper.”
After the first photo ran last year, Bryan said they arrested the person in the photo the day after he appeared in The Democrat.
“We don’t always have that kind of success, but every tip we receive is taken seriously and followed up on,” Bryan said. “Sometimes we can’t call the person making the tip back to thank them, as many are anonymous.
“I’d like to thank those people who have called in for their valuable assistance.”
Bryan said those with information on the areas most wanted should call the tip line at 615-444-1412, ext. 268. All information will remain confidential.
