A double bogey on the par-5 18th hole kept Polston from tying for the first round lead. The Lafayette native had seven pars and five bogeys to go with his five birdies. He trails Lindsey Wilson’s Alex Durham and Rasmus Lind by two strokes heading into Tuesday’s final round and is tied for sixth.
Senior Zach Kean registered three birdies in his round of four-over par 76. The Lafayette native is tied for 10th along with three other players who are just four shots off the lead. Kean birdied the par-5 18th, his final hole of the day, but made double bogey on the par-3 11th as well, his only double in the round.
Freshman Jacon Nolen collected 11 pars and birdied the par-5 18th hole, shooting an opening-round 79, seven-over par. Sophomore Garrett Daniel netted 12 pars in his round of 80, but a pair of double bogeys in the last five holes derailed his round. Nolen is tied for 19th and Daniel tied for 24th heading into Tuesday.
Senior Zach Johnson struggled through his first round, posting an 82 with just one birdie and nine pars. A double bogey and a triple bogey in a four-hole stretch on the back nine were the main culprits for the Tampa, Fla., native, who is tied for 34th.
Lindsey Wilson shot a blistering 292 as a team to hold the overall lead by 17 shots over Cumberland, Asbury University and the University of the Cumberlands.
Strode leads by one, CU tied for first at Mid-South Invitational
LONDON, Ky. — Junior Savanna Strode recorded six birdies and holds a one-shot lead after posting a two-over par 75 while Cumberland is tied for the lead as a team on Monday at the Mid-South Conference Spring Invitational at Crooked Creek Golf Club.
The Celina, Tenn., native opened her round with four birdies in the first seven holes but then played the next five holes in five-over par. She finished the round with four pars and a birdie before a double bogey at her final hole, the par-3 11th, kept from her even par on the day. Strode holds a one-stroke advantage over Kaitlyn Riley from the University of the Cumberlands heading into Tuesday’s final round.
Freshman Raquel Romero Valverde carded a first-round 78 with three straight birdies on 15, 16 and 17. She posted eight pars and is tied for fourth overall, three shots behind Strode.
Juniors Morgan Stuckey and Abbey Burgdorf each stand tied for 10th after the opening round, shooting 83. Stuckey collected nine pars and one birdie in her round, while Burgdorf posted registered eight pars and one birdie.
Sophomore Anna Leigh Cleveland shot 91 on Monday and is tied for 26th.
Cumberland and the University of the Cumberlands are tied for the team lead at 319 after the opening round with Lindsey Wilson five shots back.
