Dezmon Huntley rushed for 102 yards and two touchdowns and Kris Parker carried 18 times for 100 yards for the Phoenix (4-1), who were outgained by the Division I FCS Blue Hose just 386-351 in the contest.
Cumberland scored touchdowns on its first two possessions of the second half, taking advantage of a fumble by Presbyterian and then a turnover on downs when the CU defense held on 4th-and-inches. Huntley’s 21-yard TD run cut the deficit to 17-13 and Kendall Johnson’s six-yard touchdown scamper gave the Phoenix a 20-17 edge early in the final quarter.
Brett Norton’s 47-yard field goal late in the third period knotted the contest at 20. Cumberland missed chances to take the lead in the fourth quarter, including a 31-yard miss from Pablo Dongarra Travecedo early in the period. CU also failed to convert a fumble by the Blue Hose that gave the Phoenix the ball near midfield after the missed field goal.
Davis took a swing pass to the right, was bottled up and reversed field, but the 5-foot-9, 155-pound receiver made a U-turn after reversing field and found a gaping hole, racing past defenders down the sideline for the score.
Kris Parker fumbled on the ensuing Cumberland possession, but the defense forced a punt that was down at the CU1 with 1:20 to play. Denarius Toliver made a 23-yard grab and Marcus Bryson caught a pass for 13 yards, but an illegal forward pass by Huntley (and it was very close to the line of scrimmage) pushed the ball back to the CU40. Huntley’s last-gasp pass fell incomplete and Cumberland dropped the contest, its first loss of the year.
Huntley completed 11-of-29 passes for 85 yards but the Phoenix did its best work on the ground, gaining 266 yards on 45 attempts with three TDs.
Torrance Marable led Presbyterian with 24 rushes for 139 yards and quarterback Ben Cheek finished 14-of-15 passing for 148 yards and one TD.
Presbyterian moved 49 yards on 10 plays on the home team’s opening drive of the contest, rushing nine times. Marable carried four times for 15 yards and Cheek added 13 yards on three attempts. Davis’ 10-yard speed sweep around left end moved the ball to the one and Mark Robinson’s second effort for the final yard gave the Blue Hose a 7-0 advantage.
Cumberland answered with an impressive 15-play, 72-yard drive, converting a pair of third downs and overcoming a delay of game penalty. Parker’s two-yard gain gave CU a first down at midfield and Telvin Rucker rushed for nine yards before a seven-yard reception by Ian Hafner was good for another first down.
Huntley sprinted right and cut back inside for a three-yard TD run, knotting the game at seven late in the first quarter.
Presbyterian took the next possession 76 yards on 10 plays, including a 24-yard completion over the middle to Davis and a 13-yard pass to John Walker. On third down a misdirection play left Marable wide open for an 11-yard touchdown and a 14-7 lead for the home team.
Huntley rushed 34 yards into Presbyterian territory on the following drive for CU, but the drive stalled and Travecedo’s 47-yard field goal had plenty of distance but was pulled to the left.
The Blue Hose covered 48 yards on 10 plays and used more than five minutes on the ensuing possession. Marable caught an 11-yard pass for a first down and Cheek’s 17-yard completion moved the ball to the CU20. A penalty and a bad snap pushed Presbyterian back and they settled for a 28-yard field goal by Norton for a 17-7 lead at the half.
Cody Carr caused a fumble on the first play of the third quarter and Josh Bates recovered just before the ball rolled out of bounds. Three plays later Huntley ran the quarterback draw up the middle and broke left once through the left for a 21-yard TD. The PAT was blocked, pulling CU within 17-13.
On the ensuing drive Presbyterian was tackled just short of the first down and tried a quarterback sneak on fourth down, but the CU defensive front pushed the pile back just chain links shy.
Huntley scrambled twice for first downs, the second one avoiding an all-out blitz, and Johnson rushed six yards around right end for a touchdown, putting the Phoenix ahead, 20-17, with 9:46 left in the third quarter.
Cumberland will end a three-game road swing this Saturday, heading to Georgetown College for a 12:30 p.m. CDT kickoff.
