Price, who started the game at tight end, became the quarterback late in the first quarter.
We just wanted to spread them out and run the ball,” said Price “I got great blocking all night from my entire offense, and I was able to hit the holes.”
The game did not get off to a great start for the Purple Tigers. After going three-and-out on their first offensive possession they gave up a 70-yard touchdown on DeKalb’s second play from scrimmage.
After another three-and-out on offense, Watertown got its first turnover of the night. Keon Dotson sacked DeKalb quarterback Tyler Cantrell and caused a fumble, which Dotson recovered at the DeKalb 3-yard line. The very next play Gene Wynne scored to tie the game at 7.
After Brandon Allison intercepted Cantrell, Price went to play quarterback. He marched the Purple Tigers 51 yards in nine plays, capping it off with a 10-yard touchdown pass to Elijah Maklary.
After holding DeKalb to a three-and-out, Watertown then marched 56 yards in eight plays leading to a 35-yard field goal for Nate Gutierrez to increase the lead to 17-7.
After the teams traded possessions, DeKalb drove 82 yards in four plays, the biggest being Cantrell hitting Bradley Miller on a slant pass which he took 63 yards down to the 3-yard line. On the next play Cantrell found Braxton Linder to close the gap to 17-14 just before halftime.
On DeKalb’s first possession of the second half the Tigers were forced to punt, but punter Andrew Fuson dropped the snap, and Zack Hill scooped up the loose ball and ran 22 yards for touchdown to increase the Purple Tigers lead to 24-14.
DeKalb still would not go away, Cantrell hit Paxton Butler for 52-yard catch and run to move DeKalb inside the Watertown 10-yard line. Two plays later Miller scored to again bring DeKalb to within three points at 24-21
Price then took over capping off a 10-play 66-yard drive with 8-yard touchdown and increasing the Purple Tigers’ lead to 31-21.
On the next DeKalb possession the Purple Tiger forced another punt. This time Fuson missed the ball and Price scooped it up at the 14-yard line and scored to increase the lead to 38-21.
After forcing DeKalb to turn the ball over on downs, Deramus Carey raced 60 yards on the first play of the drive to put the game out of reach at 45-21.
Another DeKalb turnover led to another Heath Price touchdown, this time a 16-yard run to increase the lead to 52-21.
“After the first quarter I thought our defense settled down, and got pressure on their quarterback,” said Watertown coach Gavin Webster. “Anytime you can get special team scores, and turnovers it really helps your offense.”
After holding DeKalb on another fourth down the Purple Tigers scored their final touchdown as Carey scored from 13 yards out.
With the win Watertown evened its record at 2-2. Next week the Tigers will look to get their first Region 4-2A win at Cascade.
“It’s a big game. We need to get a region win after to losing to Trousdale County last week,” said Webster.
