HUNTINGTON — Trousdale County's second trip to Huntingdon to open the playoffs wasn't much better than the first.

In 2015, the Yellow Jackets suffered their worst-ever playoff loss - a 39-0 domination by the Mustangs.

This year, Trousdale was on the short end of a 52-27 decision. It is the most points ever allowed by the Yellow Jackets in the playoffs and also marks the first time the nine-time state champions have ended the season with first-round defeats.

"They hit us on a couple of big plays, and with our offense it's hard to get down," said Trousdale interim coach Ben Johnson. "Huntingdon's a great team."

Trousdale County (8-3) jumped ahead early, leading 13-6 after the first quarter. Sophomore Keyvont Baines scored both touchdowns for the Yellow Jackets, on a 1-yard run and an 85-yard kickoff return.

"We talked about starting fast, that was one of our big conversations from last week," Johnson said. "We had some momentum going in, but some negative plays shot us in the foot."

Huntingdon (8-2) took control in the second quarter, outscoring the Yellow Jackets 22-0 as quarterback Kade Pearson threw two touchdown passes of 13 and 37 yards. Senior running back Zach Dodson also had a big night for the Mustangs, scoring three touchdowns as Huntingdon's single-wing offense left the Trousdale defense confused on several occasions.

"The single wing's a very difficult offense to defend when you see it one time a year," Johnson said. "We spent a lot of hours this week trying to balance up formations. We took some chances to one side or the other; it left us vulnerable."

Huntingdon will travel to defending 1A state champion Nashville Christian next Friday.
