The third quarter proved to be the difference maker in Mt. Juliet’s 35-21 win at Overton High School on Friday night.

Special teams played a big role, with back-to-back game-changing plays. The Bears’ Aidan Raines returned a kickoff 84 yards for a score at 3:19 left in the third quarter after picking up a fumble to break a 21-21 tie. The Bears recovered an onside kick, which paved the way for another Raines touchdown with 12 seconds remaining in the quarter.

“Special teams came up big for us,” said Mt. Juliet head coach Trey Perry.

Rashard Robertson muscled in a 2-yard score to give Mt. Juliet an early 7-0 advantage at 7:52 in the first.

The Bears’ Mason Earls added a 9-yard run with 31 seconds left in the opening quarter to give Mt. Juliet a 14-0 lead.

Overton’s Taverius Travis cut the lead in half with just less than 10 minutes to play in the second after a 3-yard touchdown run.

Raines had his first score of the game with 6:18 left in the half to give Mt. Juliet a 21-7 lead.

Overton quarterback Sam Mast connected with Zuriel Cane on a 19-yard touchdown pass with 2:59 left in the first half and found Theo Jackson in the back of the end zone with 3:44 left in the third to knot the score before the Bears took control of the game.

“More than anything else, it was the players being coachable,” said Perry, following the win. “We made some adjustments at halftime, and the kids responded. Controlling the clock offensively was also a big part.”

The Bears will visit Antioch on Thursday.
