An elderly Watertown man died Monday morning in a house fire, the cause of which remains under investigation.

The fire started sometime before noon at a singlewide trailer at 225 Newtown Road, according to Watertown fire Chief John Jewell. Jewell said the fire was about 50-percent involved when firefighters arrived.

Jewell said it took firefighters about 10 minutes to knock down the flames and gain entry. Once inside, firefighters found the body of a 73-year-old man.

Jewell said he couldn’t release the man’s identity due to notification of next of kin.

The cause also remained under investigation. Investigators with the state fire marshal’s investigations unit were en route to the scene Monday afternoon.

“He did use a wood-burning stove for heat, but we’re unsure if that caused the fire,” Jewell said.

Wilson Emergency Management Agency firefighters assisted in putting out the fire.
