The city of Lebanon gave away 2,400 trees on Friday morning as part of the Tennessee Environmental Council’s collaborative effort to plant 100,000 native trees over the weekend.

Five species of trees were available, including Tennessee’s state tree, the tulip poplar, along with red oak, Virginia pine, American plum, and eastern redbud.

The giveaway started at 9 a.m., and citizens received the trees on a first-come, first-serve basis.

Kroger, Walmart and Publix donated umbrella bags to the city to help safely transport the saplings. Mt. Juliet also gave away tree saplings on Friday.

The Wilson County Stormwater Department will give away trees Saturday starting at 7 a.m. in front of the Wilson County Expo Center. The same five species will be available at the Expo Center on Saturday.
