Teenage American Idol contestant Tristan McIntosh, of Nashville, continued her surge in the show’s final season as she avoided elimination and advanced to the Top 6 for next week.
McIntosh, 15, performed Martina McBride’s “A Broken Wing” after Idol judges summoned singers who had received the most votes to sing following duet performances.
Judges eliminated McIntosh’s partner, Lee Jean, along with Avalon Young after their performance last week. Young was also in last week’s bottom three. Judges “saved” Sonika Vaid, who was also in this week’s bottom three.
McBride took to Twitter after McIntosh’s performance, tweeting McIntosh did a “Beautiful job.”
Once again, Idol judges were complimentary of McIntosh’s performance.
“You have such a perfectly suited country voice. It’s really so beautiful and that was a perfect song for you, as far as I’m concerned,” Jennifer Lopez said. “There was one thing at the end you went for, but I applaud you for going for it because it was really up there.”
Harry Connick Jr. praised McIntosh’s use of emotion in the song, while Keith Urban also shared positive remarks.
“It was beautiful. It was the right song for you. I think that is the perfect kind of song for you. Your voice is tailor-made for it,” Urban said.
“I love your grandfather being so supportive like he’s been. It’s so touching. My dad got me into country music and he passed away in December, so I got a little emotional watching that,” he said.
Last week, McIntosh’s heartfelt performance of Vince Gill’s “Go Rest High on That Mountain” mirrored the songstress’ audition performance – in grade and dedication.
“Yes. My grandfather,” McIntosh said when Connick questioned if she had someone in mind during her performance. “I found out a few days ago, he broke his back. It’s kind of dedicated to him,” she said.
“That’s the Tristan that America fell in love with and that got you to this point and honestly it’s your sweet spot, your comfort zone and you did a beautiful job on it, so you should be very proud,” Lopez said.
