The Wilson County Commission is tasked with picking a replacement within 120 days in case of a vacancy, according to state law. The next Wilson County Commission meeting is Oct. 16.
The appointee would only hold the position until the next General Election in August 2018.
Individuals nominated must be residents of Zone 7, which consists of Wilson County Commission districts 4, 5, 17, 19 and 22. Registered voters of Zone 7 are allowed to submit names for consideration either in person at the Wilson County Commission meeting the night of the appointment or in writing to Hutto prior to the meeting.
At the commission meeting, the first order of business under elections on the agenda will be to determine if the Wilson County Commission will fill the vacancy in October.
If the commission chooses to appoint the school board member for Zone 7, the group will go out of session and allow for public comments to begin. At that time, the public will be allowed to submit names to the commissioners they would like to see as the school board member for Zone 7.
After the public comments period ends, the commission will return to regular session and review the nominations given during the public comments period. Commissioners will make their nominations for school board member Zone 7.
Commissioners must make all official nominations, although the public comments will be accepted and considered. A commissioner can nominate an individual recommended by the public, providing the individual nominated agrees, in writing, to serve if nominated. A commissioner could also choose to nominate an individual that was not discussed during the time for public comments.
In that case, the commissioner who makes the nomination must provide a signed statement by the nominee that he or she is willing to serve should they be elected. There is no second required to the nominations.
After nominations cease on the floor of the commission meeting, those nominated will be given an opportunity to address the group. Nominees will be asked to make a brief statement about themselves and why they want the position. Only nominees who were nominated by a commissioner will be allowed to address the commission at that time.
The commissioners will use paper ballots to vote. It will take a majority vote of at least 13 votes on the first ballot. If there is a tie between two individuals, the nominees with the lowest number of votes will be eliminated, and a second vote will be taken.
The process will continue until one person receives a majority 13 votes.
