Vol State Fiesta to feature new soccer goal kicking contest

Staff Reports • Updated Sep 8, 2016 at 7:00 PM

Soccer players of all ages are invited to give it their best shot Sept. 24 at the 10th annual Fall Fiesta at Volunteer State Community College.

The celebration of Hispanic culture will include a new soccer goal-kicking contest, with several age categories from kids to adult. Just Soccer of Hendersonville will sponsor the contest. Prizes will include balls, jerseys and other soccer gear, in each age category.

“Rather than having a team tournament this year, we decided to open it up to everyone with the goal kicking contest. Contestants can register that day, and it’s free to participate. We’ll provide the soccer balls,” said Eric Melcher, Vol State coordinator of communications. “It’s a great way for the entire family to come out and enjoy the day and help us celebrate the 10th anniversary of the Fiesta.”

The Fiesta is a free event that will feature food, music and fun. The food contest provides a venue for people to showcase their favorite dishes.

“There are so many different countries that make up what we call Hispanic,” Melcher said. “Food is a great way to show-off countries and their cultural heritage. The food contest is open to everyone and we have prizes for the winners. After judging, the food samples are given away to the public.”

In addition to the food cook-off contest at 11 a.m., there will be a free Mexican lunch and drinks starting at noon. The family event, held outside on the campus grounds, will include live music, dance groups, art activities and plenty of fun games for children.

The Fall Fiesta at Vol State will be held from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. The event will happen, rain or shine, on the Volunteer State Community College campus at 1480 Nashville Pike in Gallatin. The rain location is the Pickel Field House. The Fall Fiesta is free and open to everyone. Families are encouraged to bring a blanket and chairs and spend the day. The soccer contest age schedule can be found in Spanish and English at volstate.edu/espanol/Fiesta.php For more information in English or Spanish call 615-230-4846.
